surfer boy

Surfer boy lives his days under the sun.
He leaves home early, a cup of homemade coffee in his left hand, his right steering the handle. Up a winding forest road, he rides to his secret life, known only to the ocean.
During the day, he sails the sea, chasing thrills. He dances and laughs. He drinks coconut water with rum.
He’ll return once it’s dark with a pack of cigarettes to share.
His mom’s laughter fills the porch.
They sit together, recounting the stories of the day.
A friend stops by—it’s been a long time, he says, to the rhythm of twinkling lights.
“It’s a peaceful life,” he says.
He wouldn’t change a thing.
The night ends slowly, like his dog’s breathing as it falls asleep.
I hope he doesn't change.
